El-Rana
(a.k.a. Simone) and his partner Leonardo Ermini use found objects such
as skateboards, surf boards, old instruments and antique silver Ex-Voto
to create their artwork.
Throughout history,
Catholic churches and shrines have been decorated with ex-votos, which
were votive offerings often made of fine silver. People would pray
for something, and then leave an Ex-Voto in the church, as thanks
for a grace rendered. For example, if a family was praying for a sailor
at sea, and he returned home unharmed, they would bring the church
an Ex-Voto in the shape of a ship. Ex-Voto came in the forms of many
different things such as body parts , (hands, feet, hearts, or anything
else that had been healed) or even livestock such as cows or other
animals!
Simone "El-Rana"
has spent years traveling through Italy, collecting silver Ex-Voto
purchased from church yard sales. He encases the Ex-Voto inside found
objects such as old skate decks or musical instruments, to create
multiple layers of meaning. The objects are delicately and beautifully
painted by Leonardo Ermini, using images from 1800's medical journals,
vintage toys, tattoo designs and religious icons to help tell the
story. In addition to the collaborative works, this show will also
feature several individual pieces by each artist.

I
Il
pittore Leonardo Ermini decora queste 'cornici' usando iconografie di
vecchie tavole mediche dell'800, gioccatoli antichi, tattoos, ed icone,
per raccontarne la storia.
Oltre
